China News & Prayer (2024.05.18-24)

Academic Direction

“I am currently in high school and I have chosen the pure science stream. My classmates all say that the humanities stream is more suitable for girls, but I really like science. However, after hearing what my classmates said, I felt confused. My mom prays for me every day, and I also pray myself. Sometimes I get so caught up in studying that I might forget to pray, but I know that the Lord Jesus is always guiding me, hoping that I can make the right choices. There was a period of time when I really didn’t know how to handle it. I am grateful to have contacted the hosts of Liangyou Radio and received your affirmation and encouragement. Besides, my English is not very good, and I would like to learn some other languages too.”

(Sister Zhao)

  • Thank you, Lord, for guiding and helping Sister Zhao to have a clear understanding of her own interests. May the Lord continue to lead her path ahead, enabling progress in both English and other languages.

Whooping Cough Resurges

In recent days, there has been an increasing trend in cases of whooping cough. Among these, the incidence rate of adolescents and adults has risen significantly. This disease, once thought to only affect infants, is gradually becoming more prevalent in older age groups. According to data from the National Disease Prevention and Control Bureau, there were 15,245 cases recorded nationwide in January and 17,105 cases in February of this year. The death toll was 5 in January and 8 in February. Whooping cough is mainly transmitted through droplets. Infected individuals are the primary source of transmission. If parents experience coughing or other symptoms, they should then wear a mask to reduce the risk of their infant becoming infected.

(“Guoshi Zhitongche, China News”, April 1, 2024)

  • May the Lord have mercy on those who are afflicted with whooping cough, especially teenagers and adults; alleviate their suffering, keeping them safe from complications. May the Lord grant wisdom to healthcare professionals, guiding them in providing proper treatment and preventing the spread of the epidemic.

Extending the Tabernacle

“Looking back on the past three years of the pandemic and reflecting on the path of my service, I am filled with endless gratitude. During the pandemic, I completed my Master’s degree in theology. As someone who only had a vocational school education, studying and reading were extremely challenging for me. But I am grateful that God gave me the opportunity to study in a theological program, and later studied at Liangyou. Meanwhile, I serve in the church on a regular basis. There were times when I considered giving up, but when I sought Him in prayer, He renewed my strength. Now, I am filled with indescribable gratitude in the presence of God every time I think of that.”

(Brother Song)

  • I am grateful that Brother Song has such a thirst for equipping himself with theological knowledge. May the Lord guide Brother Song’s path ahead, enabling him to serve the church better and through his life to influence more people to rise up and serve the Lord.

Life and Death Abreast

There have been reports of people buying houses to store urns containing ashes. These “urn houses” are mostly owned by residents living in first and second-tier cities, where they face problems such as high cemetery prices and expensive maintenance fees. As a result, they buy properties in more remote neighborhoods to house the urns. Some floors in these buildings even have more deceased residents than living ones, causing unease among neighbors. Additionally, these housing estates lack proper management, and the burning of paper offerings and lighting of incense sticks during festivals and holidays pose safety concerns. Residents hope that legislative authorities will promptly enact relevant regulations, and the relevant departments should also rectify the chaotic charging practices in the funeral industry.

(“Legal Daily”, April 3, 2024)

  • People lack inner peace because they do not know the Lord. Pray for the Lord’s mercy. Pray that government agencies will expedite efforts to rectify this chaotic situation and to prevent accidents caused by ritual sacrifices, so that both the living and the deceased can stay in peace.
